Directions: From La Junta head Southwest on Hwy 350 for 13 miles. Make a right (north) on Hwy 71 for .5 mi and enter the parking area and trailhead.
The Sierra Vista Overlook is part of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail and gives you a quick taste of the great plains. While it is possible to hike 3 mi along the Santa Fe Trail from here to the Timpas Picnic Area, the short interpretive trail gives you a nice view of the never ending plains, scrub, and brush. Walk up along the side of the hill to a covered viewpoint, descend and loop around back to the parking area. |
