DIRECTIONS: From Boulder, head north on either Hwy 36 or Broadway to Lee Hill Drive and head west. Follow Lee Hill Drive for 1 mile and turn left onto Wagonwheel Gap Road. After 1 mile on Wagonwheel Gap Road, turn left onto Pinto Drive. The parking area is just up the road.
The Anne U. White Trail is popular...very popular... So much so, that it took me 15 years to go and hike the trail. The trail was shut down for a few years following the 2013 floods and has just recently opened. When I had a free, snowy, Thursday morning available, the time was right to hit the Anne U. White Trail, and I'm glad I did.
This trail is beautiful in the winter, cold and quiet. The snow probably won't be so deep that you'll need snowshoes, but bring along some micro-spikes. The trail follows Fourmile Canyon Creek through a narrow canyon for just about the entirety of the hike. There are multiple creek crossings but they are all easy to navigate. The trail builders did a terrific job rebuilding this trail. This hike doesn't really need much of a description, it's just about impossible to get lost if you stay on the trail. The first mile stays pretty tight to the bottom of the canyon through pine forest and next to rocky cliffs and ledges. After a mile, the terrain opens up a bit and you get some views of the surrounding Boulder foothills. At the 1 1/4 mile mark you'll reach a picturesque little waterfall in a rocky basin. Climb the rock and cross over the top of the falls and re-enter a forested segment. At 1.7 miles, you abruptly reach a sign telling you that private property is ahead and the trail is over...too bad, too short... Head back through the canyon enjoying the same scenery on the way back. It's easy to see why this trail is so popular. If you want to experience it in the spring, summer, or fall...go early and go mid-week. It's just about impossible to get a parking spot on the weekends. In the middle of the winter, on a cold, snowy, weekday, this trail is just perfect. |
