The Soda Canyon Overlook Trail is a great hike that is relatively easy but still long enough to be a satisfying hike. The majority of the trail crosses through pinyon-juniper forests as it works its way to the canyon rim and some incredible vistas.
There is not much needed in the way of directions for this hike as its well signed and easy to follow. Hike the trail through the scrub and forest and at the ½ mile mark you arrive at the overlook loop. There are three overlooks on this loop and going clockwise lets you save the best view for last.
The first two views look across Soda Canyon. The canyon views are beautiful but there are no cliff dwellings to be seen…just beautiful canyons with the La Plata Mountains popping up over the canyon horizon. The final viewpoint provides a great view of Balcony House. For an up-close experience with Balcony House be sure to book a ranger led tour in the summer and fall. The view is distant but you can still see most of the details of this impressive cliff dwelling. After taking in the views, return to the trailhead the same way you came, through the pinyon-juniper forest.
Soda Canyon Overlook Trail is less visited than the main attractions of the park. The trail is good for kids and good for a quick but satisfying hike with tremendous canyon and cliff dwelling views. A hidden gem hike for sure.
