DIRECTIONS:

Piedra Falls can be found at the end of a long system of good dirt roads north of Pagosa Springs. The way is well signed so finding the trailhead is easier than you might think, especially as cell service is poor in this area. (Directions from USFS Website: From Pagosa Springs: Travel west on U.S. Highway 160 to Piedra Road (County Road 600/FR 631). Turn north on Piedra Road for 17 miles. Turn right on Middle Fork Road (FR 636). Travel 2 miles, then turn right on East Toner Road (FR 637). Stay on East Toner Road to the trailhead at its end.)

HIKE DESCRRIPTION:

Piedra Falls is a wonderful hike to the edge of the mighty Weminuche Wilderness.  While the trail is relatively short, only about one mile roundtrip, the scenery is spectacular and the waterfall at the end of the trail is well worth the effort to get there. In all likelihood, it will take you longer to drive to the trailhead then it will to hike to the falls. However, don't let the short mileage discourage you, the hike is a must do for anybody visiting the Pagosa Springs area.  Additionally, the drive to the trailhead is a beautiful adventure in itself.

The hike needs little description.  From the trailhead, head up the wide trail and look to the left for the trail sign after the eroded landslide area.  The trail heads up densely forested gulch above the Piedra River. Before long you descend into a narrow, rocky, volcanic canyon.  Towering rock formations, pristine old growth forest and a stunning waterfall make this the perfect taste of the Weminuche Wilderness.
