Hike Description:
Molas Pass is a not-so-hidden gem of hiking and scenery above Silverton, Colorado. The pass offers a relatively easy way to take in the views of some of the San Juan’s most stunning mountains, the Grenadier Range to the immediate east of the pass. Molas Pass is also home to Molas Lake (privately owned and maintained) and Little Molas Lake. The recreational opportunities at the pass are numerous and the Colorado Trail provides a perfect way to hike on the pass without venturing out into the Weminuche Wilderness, although you really should do that some time.
Start your hike from the Molas Trailhead. This hike can be a quick and easy walk to take in the views or you can use it as a start to a multi-day backpacking trip east into the Grenadiers. Hiking from Molas Lake to Little Molas Lake is something in between. The hike is breathtaking. It’s about 4.6 miles roundtrip and gains about 500 ft of elevation, all above 10,500 ft. The hike is not too difficult, but also not too easy. The most dangerous part of this hike is crossing Hwy 550, be careful and patient.
From the trailhead, head out into a grassy meadow. Snowdon Peak 13,074 ft is directly ahead and stays with you for the entire hike, you’ll know this peak by its coal-like black sheen. As you hike past the trees the Grenadiers will come into view…wow… Electric Peak and Mt. Garfield are the front runners and you should be able to make out Arrow and Vestal Peaks as well. These 13ers are some of the most impressive peaks in all of Colorado.
Continuing on the CO Trail, you’ll dip down into a ravine, cross Molas Creek, and start making your way up the hillside. The views are amazing as you gain elevation. When the trail turns to the west, the colorful Grand Turk and Spencer Peaks demand your attention. After a little more than a mile, cross Hwy 550 and continue west. The trail gets less steep in this segment and after about half a mile, you’ll reach Little Molas Lake. Take some time to relax and take in the scenery before making your way back the way you came to the Molas Trailhead.
This really is a stunning section of the Colorado Trail. On a summer weekend it may get a bit busy up there, but don’t let that deter you. Most folks just hike a little ways from the highway, you’ll be able to find plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy some peaceful mountain time.
