Hike Description:

The Buffalo Trail to Tallman Ranch in Golden Gate Canyon State Park is a quiet and peaceful trail in all seasons but autumn provides an extra bonus of golden aspen trees lining much of the trail.  The Trail is very basic and consists of a straight downhill segment, a loop around the historic Tallman Ranch, and an uphill hike back to the trailhead. This hike is generally not very busy and an excellent way to experience the park without the crowds.

From the Buffalo Trailhead at the Riffleman Phillips Group Campground, head down the old road, now closed to vehicle traffic.  The trail is lined by pine and aspens trees providing near constant shade.  The trail cuts through the forest, passing by a few historic structures, for nearly a mile until you reach the start of the Forgotten Valley.  At the high point of the valley the landscape opens up and provides scenic views of the surrounding hillsides and Tallman Ranch. To the right is a wood shelter, though I’m not sure if you can camp there, and soon after the trail forks starting the loop. 

I recommend bearing to the left at the fork and following the trail as it leads up the adjacent gully shortly before turning around and descending to the ranch and pond. At this point, you can explore the pond and historic ranch structures or just relax in the meadow.  When you are ready, complete the loop and start the uphill hike back to the trailhead. You gain about 600 ft of elevation on your way back but it’s relatively gentle and not too difficult. 

Golden Gate Canyon State Park is a hotspot for fall colors and the Buffalo Trail is an out of the way hike that gives you a nice taste of autumn.  Keep in mind that the shaded nature of the trail means that it gets a bit chilly late in the day and the lack of sunlight diminishes the aspen glow a bit. This is a nice hike, but not the park’s best offering for fall colors.  For that, try the popular (and busy) Racoon Trail.
