Hike Description:
The hike to the Sallie Barber Mine, is another of those wonderful trails maintained by Summit County Trails and Open Space east of Breckenridge. The Sallie Barber Mine is one of the more impressive mines preserved as an example of Colorado’s deep mining history. This trail is a straight shot up a wide dirt road so it's suitable for most levels of hikers, kids and adults alike.
There are a few options for routes to the Sallie Barber Mine, you can take the V3 Trail up from the B&B Trailhead or drive much of the way via Mount Baldy Road. However, the official trail to the Sallie Barber Mine starts from the Lincoln Townsite Trailhead along French Gulch Road and follows an old dirt road now closed to motor vehicle use for about 2 ¾ miles to the Mine. The road can get a bit tedious at times but also provides some great views of the Tenmile Range while it steadily climbs through pine forest.
At the end of the road, you reach the mine. This mine is a popular spot and has been well preserved. The Colorado Historical … has done a good job of maintaining this site giving you the opportunity to walk up to the structures and see first hand the impressive engineering of the old miners. Of course, please be careful in mining areas and avoid climbing on structures unless it is clear that they are open to exploration. Some sections of the main structure on this site are designed so that you can enter and explore. Be sure to stay out of open abandoned mine shafts though, they can be very dangerous.
After you’ve read the interpretive signs and explored the mine to your heart's content. Head back down the road back to the trailhead.
