Hike Description:
The Russell Lakes State Wildlife Area is composed of many acres of the San Luis Valley Floor including multiple ponds linked with wetlands. The area provides habitat for many species of birds and mammals and is therefore protected by the state of Colorado. For hikers, this area provides a nice easy nature trail that crosses the wetlands and leads to a viewing platform above Johnson Lake, one of the larger lakes in the area.
Aside from the natural resources of the wildlife area, the big draw for hikers to this area are the amazing and expansive views of the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in the eastern distance. On a clear day you can see the entirety of the range from north to south. This easy trail is exposed so watch out for summer sun and storms. Come for the wildlife, stay for the vistas.
