From Nederland, head south on CO Hwy 119/72 for 2 miles to Haul Road, a good dirt road. Follow Haul Road for just over a mile to the West Magnolia Trailhead.

Hike Description:

The area around Nederland is widely regarded as a hotspot for fall foliage.  Easy hiking, mountain views, and endless groves of young aspen trees provide the perfect setting for soaking in the vibrant colors and cooler temperatures.  The Observatory Trail starting at the West Magnolia Trailhead is one of the best hikes to explore this area, but it’s also one of the most popular.

From the parking lot and trailhead, Observatory Trail heads into the aspen forest and across fields of smaller, young aspen trees before entering a picturesque grover of taller older aspens.  After a bit less than half a mile, the trail crosses Observatory Road and continues on the other side of the road.

The trail crests a hill  and weaves around until you reach a trail junction. Bear left onto the Lookout Trail which cuts across the northern face of the hill and presents wonderful views to the Indian Peaks in the northwest.

Follow the Lookout Trail to the southwest until you reach the junction with the Hobbit trail.  The Hobbit trail branches off to the northwest but I do recall the sign being in a weird spot, making it seem like you are turning left onto the Hobbit Trail.  While this spot may be confusing, bear left and head downhill back in the direction of the trailhead.

The trail descends and weaves back towards Observatory Road.  You can either take the road or the unnamed trail just before the road back to the north and the observatory trail.  The trail passes through some of the prettiest aspen groves of the hike as well as a nice pond, so I recommend the trail.

When you reach the spot where the Observatory Trail crosses Observatory Road, follow the Observatory Trail back to the trailhead.

Though popular, this is a wonderful fall trail. You won’t be alone, but there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the scenery.
